Frank Vatrano signs Shohei Ohtani contract

Frank Vatrano is a valuable player for the Anaheim Ducks.

He produces well offensively: he finished the last campaign with a career-high 37 goals. In his first season in a Ducks uniform, he scored 24.

The forward therefore signed a contract extension with the Ducks. We are talking about a three-year agreement valued at $18 million.

But here’s what’s interesting about said contract.

Vatrano signed a Shohei Ohtani-style agreement: he will receive $3 million in real salary during the duration of his agreement… And from 2035, Vatrano will be able to earn $900,000 per year until 2045.

His plan is to move out of California after his contract in order to pay less taxes:

I say it looks like Shohei Ohtani’s contract and you’ll see why.

In December 2023, the MLB star signed a $700 million contract… But he will only receive 20 of the $700 million from his contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers over the next 10 years.

He will receive the other 680 million dollars from 2034 until 2043.

This is the first contract of its kind that we have seen in the NHL and we have to wonder if it can become a habit for the different clubs on the Bettman circuit.

Because there is an advantage: Vatrano’s contract will count for $4.57 million on the Ducks’ payroll (instead of $6 million).

This will allow the Anaheim team to have more money for other guys:

The contract is interesting for the player and for the organization.

It’s true that it’s weird to think that Vatrano will receive money until 2045… But at the same time, we must not forget that the salary cap will rise in the coming years and that this amount will become quite minimal thanks.

A great signing for the Ducks, so…. And Vatrano, as a result, secures its future financially.
