Nicole Kidman wants to revisit one of her most notable roles in the horror genre and her desire is as intriguing as it is worrying.
With a career spanning over three decades, to say that Nicole Kidman is one of Hollywood's mainstays would be an understatement. Chaining critical and commercial successes, winning an Oscar for The Hoursshe seems capable of exploring all creative terrains, multiplying striking performances in works as varied as Moulin Rouge!, Big Little Lies or even The Northman.
While promoting his next film, Babygirlan erotic thriller promising to explore female desire like never before, the Australian actress expressed her desire to revisit one of the characters she played in a horror film. Although Nicole Kidman has previously stated that she is obsessed with horror films, and that she would like to play for James Wan again, but in the realm of terror, her recent statement has raised some questions, and we wonder if it's a serious thought or a simple joke (we hope it's a joke).
Nicole Kidman ready for a sequel
In an interview given to The GuardianNicole Kidman explained that she would like playing Grace Stewart again, the character she played in the film The Others d'Alejandro Amenábar released in 2001. The actress stated that she felt this film was ” ignored » and that she had “ loved this character« .
Nicole Kidman played a mother overprotecting her children in an isolated mansion, while battling supernatural phenomena. The film was a success with both the press and the public, and grossed more than $210 million at the worldwide box office for an initial budget of $17 million.
However, the idea of a sequel seems more than risky. The final twist of the original work, which we will not reveal here, was so impactful that it seemed to definitively close the story. Revisiting this universe would risk weakening the initial impact by attempting to extend an already fully accomplished plot. Aside from making a prequel, which wouldn't make much sense, we don't see how Kidman could reprise the role of Grace.
That said, let's not forget that the film industry is capable of the greatest magic tricks to bring certain films or licenses back from the dead. And since hell seems to exist for good, Hollywood announced in 2020 that a remake of The Others will indeed take place. Except that since then, we haven't had any news about this project (and that's a good thing).
For the moment, no official announcement has confirmed or denied the development of a sequel to The Others. Nicole Kidman's words can be seen as a simple expression of nostalgia or a personal desire without a concrete plan, which we sincerely hope. Furthermore, Alejandro Amenábar did not comment on Nicole Kidman's statements.
Spectators will be able to find Nicole Kidman in Babygirlwhich will arrive in French cinemas on January 15, 2025.
