Nick Clegg, Meta’s president of global affairs, has announced he is leaving the company. Mr. Clegg was previously Deputy Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. He will be replaced by Joel Kaplan, Nick Clegg’s deputy and a prominent American Republican.

Nick Clegg, Meta’s president of global affairs, announced he was stepping down to make way for his deputy, Joel Kaplan.

Before joining Meta, Nick Clegg served as Deputy Prime Minister of the United Kingdom and leader of the Liberal Democrat Party. Joey Kaplan, his successor, joined Meta in 2011 to oversee U.S. public policy. Mr. Kaplan previously worked in the administration of former US President George W. Bush.

Clegg announced his departure in a Facebook post, saying it was “the right time” to move on. He called his tenure “the adventure of a lifetime” and acknowledged that Meta had been the subject of “scrutiny and significant controversy” during his tenure.

“I am proud of the work I have been able to accomplish leading and supporting teams across the company to ensure that continued innovation goes hand in hand with increased transparency and accountability, as well as new forms of governance,” Mr. Clegg wrote.

Many see the move as Meta’s desire to reconnect with President-elect Donald Trump, who will take office this month. Trump was banned from Facebook and Instagram in 2021 following the Capitol riots. Meta banned Trump’s accounts in 2023.
