When the value of stone crumbles, France, collectively, becomes poorer. In 2023, the fall in real estate prices led to a significant decline in national economic wealth. At the end of 2023, this was 18,674 billion euros, according to a note from INSEE and the Banque de France, published on December 11, 2024. Significantly less than twelve months previously, at the end of 2022, when it reached 20,052 billion euros.
This drop of 4.2% in one year is all the more spectacular as it follows eight years of strong growth: national assets grew by 5.7% in 2022 and by 4.8% on average between 2014 and 2022. “This is mainly due to the fall in property prices”explains INSEE in this note. Indeed, in 2023, their prices fell by 3.9%, according to the notaries index. If stone weighs so much in the evolution of national heritage, it is because it is the main component. From 2016 to 2021, this asset category was the primary factor in increasing the country’s wealth.
