The Senegalese President, Bassirou Diomaye Faye, announced on Tuesday the end of all foreign military presence in Senegal from the year 2025.
Diomaye Faye spoke during the traditional speech to the nation on December 31, confirming with these words his desire to restore national sovereignty.
“I have already instructed the Minister of the Armed Forces to propose a new defense and security doctrine involving, among other consequences, the end of all military presences of foreign countries in Senegal from 2025,” indicated Faye.
As a prelude to the commemoration of the 80th anniversary of the Thiaroye massacre (December 1), the president mentioned this possibility, during an interview at the end of November with foreign media, without giving a precise date.
A decision which mainly targets France which has three bases in the country.
“All friends of Senegal will be treated as strategic partners within the framework of open, diversified and uninhibited cooperation,” he stressed.
Coming to power in March 2024, Faye reiterated his commitment to transparency and good governance. In this regard, he announced four new laws to be submitted to the national assembly.
“They concern the protection of whistleblowers, the reform of the anti-corruption body, access to information and the declaration of assets,” he detailed, ensuring that the declaration of heritage will now be “generalized to all public sector agents without exception”.
Holders of elective or nominative positions involving budgetary management will also be subject to it.
The Senegalese president also announced the establishment during the first quarter of 2025 of a platform to give the opportunity to Senegalese in the country and the diaspora to apply for public positions in competition or to propose projects and opportunities for ‘investment.
President Faye highlighted his ambition to complete the definitive peace process in Casamance that has been underway for years.
“There can be no real progress without lasting peace. This is why one of my priorities remains definitive peace in Casamance. With this in mind, I initiated the Diomaye Plan for Casamance (Pdc), in order to support the return of displaced populations and to support the peace process in Casamance,” he assured.
