DTo say that there is distrust towards the political world, in these times when governments are falling like the last leaves hanging on the branches, is a mild understatement. At the start of 2024, according to a new annual Cevipof barometer on political trust, carried out with the OpinionWay polling institute, 70% of French people no longer trust politics. In addition, 68% believe that the current democratic model does not work well. Not sure that with the recent upheavals the trend has improved.
It is in this context that Céline Piot, doctor in contemporary history, opposition municipal councilor in Mont-de-Marsan and co-host of the Republican and Socialist Left in the Landes, decided to launch a new association called (Dé )liberations.
“The first objective is to free up speech to allow everyone to participate in a debate of ideas, to express themselves and to listen to the point of view of others. Without invective. But it is not enough to speak, the debate must also be successful and we must therefore deliberate,” begins the elected official.
In front of the market
She is sure of it: despite everything, fellow citizens continue to be interested in politics. With this new association, Céline Piot wants to start from the ground up. “We listen to people, we collect ideas to avoid disconnection with reality. » A discipline that she implemented in November, on Saturdays, in front of the Saint-Roch market.
“We come back to the very essence of democracy, a bit like the agora”
“The discussions are very interesting. We come back to the very essence of democracy, a bit like the agora. What emerges from the first exchanges is the definition of “we”. What makes us, all together, a society? ”, she notes.
And when asked about the proximity of the electoral calendar (the municipal elections will take place in spring 2026, Editor's note) and the – sudden – birth of this association, the opposition municipal councilor assures that there is no link . “This is in-depth work. These discussions will provide food for thought. That would be too reductive. Besides, people who pass me on the market ask questions. They tell me: ''We see you and yet there are no elections soon.'' I tell them that political life is all the time. This association is detached from the calendar and aims for a long-term objective. »
For the moment, five people have joined this new group which is just waiting to grow. Beyond these discussions, the structure also wishes to organize round tables, conferences and why not publish everything it has collected.
