Jason Momoa becomes Lobo, a cult anti-hero from the DC Universe

Jason Momoa, the ex-Aquaman, will play Lobo, the famous intergalactic anti-hero, in the film Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrowscheduled for 2026. An announcement that marks a bold turning point for the actor and the DC Universe.

Jason Momoa trades Aquaman’s trident for Lobo’s motorcycle. The official announcement of his new role in the DC Universe has been confirmed by Deadline this December 30, causing a wave of excitement among fans. The actor will lend his features to the famous anti-hero in Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrowan ambitious project led by Craig Gillespie and scheduled for release in June 2026.

A significant announcement

Jason Momoa teased this transition in an Instagram post. He attached a screenshot of an old interview in which he expressed his interest in the character of Lobo. “I collect comics, I don’t do it as much now, but he’s always been my favorite. (…) It’s the perfect role for me. (…) If someone called me to ask me to play it, it would be a f***ing yes. »

Although the actor was initially associated with Aquaman, his imposing physique and raw charisma seemed long suited to embody this new character. James Gunn, creative director of DC Studios, was quick to fuel excitement by sharing a drawing of Lobo on his social media shortly after the announcement.

Who is this chaotic anti-hero?

Created in 1983 by Roger Slifer and Keith Giffen, Lobo is an intergalactic mercenary emblematic of the DC universe, known for his brutality, his corrosive humor and his taste for chaos. Originally from Czarnia, a peaceful world that he himself destroyed, this cult character possesses superhuman strength, regenerative abilities and invulnerability, making him a parody of violent superheroes like Wolverine, before becoming an icon to full part.

Lobo does not appear in the original comics Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow by Tom King and Bilquis Evely, released in 2022. However, Tom King revealed that he considered integrating the character before refocusing his story on Supergirl.

A new film for 2026

The film, directed by Craig Gillespie (Me, Tonya), will begin filming on January 13, 2025 for a release scheduled for June 26, 2026. Milly Alcock (the young Rhaenyra Targaryen in House of the Dragon) will play Supergirl, while Matthias Schoenaerts will play the villainous Krem of Yellow Hill and Eve Ridley will play Ruthye Mary Knolle. Jason Momoa will complete this cast.

This choice of DC Studios reflects the ambition of James Gunn and Peter Safran to reinvent the DC cinematic universe. Momoa, who largely contributed to the success of the films Aquaman with more than $1.5 billion in cumulative revenue, is now part of this new era.
