LeBron James turns 40: “If I wanted to, I could play at a high level for another five or seven years”

LeBron James said on Monday, his 40th birthday, that he could play at a high level for another five or seven seasons, although he announced that it is not in his plans and that he hopes to take his retirement in Los Angeles.

“If I really wanted to, I could probably play at a high level for another five or seven years, even though it seems strange to say. But I’m not going to do that,” the star winger said in remarks to reporters during Lakers training in Los Angeles.

LeBron is the oldest player in the NBA as of last season, holding the all-time record in points scored and also minutes played.

“It’s almost funny, actually, to think about where I am, to see that I’m still playing at a high level. I’m still young, but considered ‘old’ compared to the years I spent in this profession,” LeBron said while reflecting on his 40th birthday.

James also assured that his intention is to retire as a Laker: “I think that’s the plan. I would like it all to end here; that would be the goal. I came here to play the last stage of my career and end it here.”

“But I’m not naive or too idealistic to not understand how the basketball world works. That said, I believe my relationship with this organization speaks for itself. And I hope I don’t have to go elsewhere before finishing my career,” he added.

In his 22nd season in the NBA, LeBron is averaging 23.5 points, 7.9 rebounds and 9 assists per game. His shooting percentage stands at 49.6% and he has recorded eight triple-doubles so far this season.

This Tuesday, the last day of the year, he will face the Cavaliers with the Lakers, the franchise with which he started in the NBA and where he won one of his four titles. The match against the Cleveland team, the best so far this season, will take place at 11 p.m. Uruguay time.
