The 25-year-old goalkeeper now knows his fate, 24 hours after being placed on waivers by the Montreal Canadiens. The 7th round pick in the 2017 draft will continue his season with the Canadian’s school club, the Laval Rocket. Compensated free agent (RFA) at the end of this season, Primeau will have the opportunity to relaunch himself under the orders of Pascal Vincent and his former goalkeeper coach Marco Marciano.
Rebuilding trust
Placed on waivers with the initial intention of continuing his progression in the AHL, Cayden Primeau will have the opportunity to see action on a team for which he has enjoyed success in the past. In 123 AHL games with the Laval Rocket, Primeau has a 63-42-12 record, a 2.63 goals against average and a 0.908 save percentage. In 55 games with the Canadian, he has a record of 13-24-7, a goal allowed average of 3.69 and an efficiency percentage of 0.884.
Not the desired scenario
After having had good times in his first full year in the NHL (8-9-4, goals allowed average at 2.99 and save percentage at 0.910), Primeau failed to establish himself as a #2 goaltender in the NHL this season (2-3-1, goals against average at 4.70 and save percentage at 0.836). Certainly, we have witnessed the worst in the case of Primeau this season, in a team that struggled to defend its zone in the first weeks of the calendar.
A big role
If Jakub Dobes were to impose himself and force the organization’s hand, Cayden Primeau could be the one who will have the mission of leading Pascal Vincent’s young team into the playoffs. The Laval Rocket has a competitive roster and a modest playoff run would prove a failure at this stage of the organization’s reconstruction. This would be a great opportunity for Cayden Primeau, quite possibly his last within the organization that drafted him.
