An 18-year-old referee, licensed within a professional football club, was stabbed with a knife on the night of June 22 to 23 in the streets of downtown Niort during a brawl. The young man, who tried to intervene, received several stab wounds.

“The Chamois Niortais Football Club is in mourning”. Through a press release, the professional club of Niort announced, Tuesday afternoon, the tragic death of young Jibril Mulard, dismissed from the club as a referee. The 18-year-old young man was killed with several stab wounds on the night of Saturday June 22 to Sunday June 23 in Niort during a brawl.

According to witness testimonies, Jibril tried to intervene during a fight in the city center. One of her friends mentioned “five stab wounds to the chest” in Le Courrier de l’Ouest. Having recently obtained his baccalaureate and driving license, Jibril’s goal was to “become a professional football referee” confides one of his relatives to Ouest-France.

“Jibril had been a referee with the club since this season and immediately took his role very seriously. He was very committed and demonstrated great qualities. Jibril was a boy with a big heart. His kindness was recognized by all. The club strongly condemns the violence suffered by Jibril and hopes that justice will be done to him. His act of bravery cost him his life,” writes the Chamois Niortais club on its social networks.

The Niort public prosecutor announced that two men had handed themselves in to the Niort police station on Sunday evening. “The latter were placed in police custody on charges of murder and attempted murder by investigators from the Poitiers criminal brigade” announced prosecutor Julien Wattebled, adding that the two individuals “face thirty years of criminal imprisonment”.
