The situation was blocked mid-morning at the Micarna factory in Courtepin (FR) occupied by anti-speciesist activists. ‘The activists do not want to start the dialogue,’ Bertrand Ruffieux, spokesperson for the Friborg police, told Keystone-ATS on Monday.
Six hooded activists were still on the roof of the building and “several dozen” others were chained inside the Micarna poultry slaughterhouse, the police spokesman said. Animal rights activists accuse Migros, of which Micarna is a subsidiary, of encouraging “a deadly system in which animals are seen as commodities.”
‘The police are present on site and waiting to be able to enter into discussions,’ explained Bertrand Ruffieux, noting that there was no sign of aggression and that everything was going well. She was informed on Monday around 4:30 a.m. that several people had illegally entered the Micarna site.
In a press release, the 269 Animal Liberation collective states that the Courtepin slaughterhouse slaughters nearly 35 million chickens per year. He criticizes Migros, ‘the largest advertising investor’ in the country, of having ‘a particularly significant influence on consumption’.
On a video broadcast by the collective, we can see several dozen activists dressed in black, some with helmets, making noise inside the building by hitting metal installations with objects.
The anti-speciesist movement, founded in France in 2016, demands 26 blockages of slaughterhouses in Europe, the occupation of head offices of large agri-food groups and the ‘liberation’ of more than 3,800 animals.
