Ferencvaros, the club of Hungary’s Barnabas Varga, say that the forward suffered “multiple” broken bones in his collision with Scotland’s Angus Gunn during the two sides’ Euro 2024 meeting on Sunday night, and that he will “most likely” undergo surgery.

Varga, said to be “stable” in hospital by the Hungarian Football Federation, went down following a mid-air clash with keeper Gunn, prompting a seven-minute stoppage in play.

The Hungary squad rallied in support of their team-mate, immediately calling for medical attention and helping to bring the stretcher onto the pitch.

“Multiple bones broke in the face of Varga Barnabas during the collision and he also suffered a concussion,” Ferencvaros posted on social media, re-posting an update from the Hungarian Football Federation account.

“He will most likely undergo surgery. He is spending the night in the hospital in Stuttgart.”

A screen was erected around Varga as he received treatment, as a number of his team-mates, including Liverpool’s Dominik Szoboszlai, were in visible distress.

Varga was stretched from the field of play and the Hungarian FA provided an update on his condition.

“Barnabas Varga’s condition is stable,” the Hungarian Federation had written earlier on social media. “Your player is currently in a hospital in Stuttgart.

“We will inform you immediately if there is any news about his status.”

Kevin Csoboth scored in the 10th minute of stopping time to secure a 1-0 win and keep Hungary in the race for qualification for the last 16, knocking Scotland out of the competition.

Csoboth celebrated by holding aloft Varga’s jersey. After the match, the Hungary camp gathered on the pitch behind captain Szoboszlai, who wore Varga’s jersey back-to-front in support of his team-mate.

Afterwards, Hungary midfielder Callum Styles had confirmed Varga was conscious.

“We don’t want to ever see that on a football pitch, but thankfully he is conscious now, and hopefully we do it all for him,” Styles told beIN Sports.

Hungary boss Marco Rossi had also provided his reaction to the incident and a further update on Varga’s condition following the game.

“In that moment, I did not realize immediately [how serious it was], then when I saw the players call the doctors I started to be worried,” Rossi said. “Everybody was really worried.

“But when Barnie left the pitch he was already awake. He was OK, so this is very good. The guy is healthy.

“He could be no more available for the rest of the tournament, but the most important thing is he is healthy.”
