The candidate of the New Popular Front, Éric Habouzit, announced on Tuesday, July 2, that he was withdrawing from the 1st constituency of Var. A three-way situation had formed after the first round of the legislative elections.

The three-way situation in the 1st constituency of Var is no more. After the first round of the legislative elections, NFP candidate Éric Habouzit announced his withdrawal on Tuesday, July 2. He came third in the vote with 22.38%.

“We met with the activists of the New Popular Front and we made a collective decision, that of blocking the extreme right,” he announced on BFM Toulon Var. “Maintaining my candidacy was ensuring the victory of the RN,” he added.

“The most responsible”

Sébastien Soulé, candidate of the far-right party, came out on top with 42.28% ahead of the outgoing MP Yannick Chenevard (Ensemble) who collected 31.37%. The candidate of the union of left-wing parties hopes to prevent the RN from winning the constituency thanks to the transfer of his votes.

“In this fight against the extreme right, in the New Popular Front, we are the wisest, the most credible, the most responsible,” he also declared during a press briefing relayed in particular by Var Matin.

The 1st constituency of Var, which includes the city of Toulon, was the only one in the department not to have an RN MP following the 2022 legislative elections. This year, five outgoing RN MPs from Var were re-elected in the first round.
