2024 Legislative Elections, 1st constituency of Gard: Valérie Rouverand (Renaissance) withdraws her candidacy

Arriving in third place on Sunday June 30 in the first round of the legislative elections, Valérie Rouverand, who had announced for a time that she would remain, has finally withdrawn.

Valérie Rouverand (Ensemble, Renaissance), who came in third place on Sunday June 30 in the first round of the legislative elections, qualified for the second with just over 12.5% of registered voters, announced her withdrawal this Tuesday July 2 early in the morning.

In a press release, she states: “I thank the voters who turned out in large numbers on Sunday to support my candidacy in this first round. Despite the clear increase in the score of the presidential majority compared to 2022, the strong surge of the RN nevertheless places me in third position in the entire first constituency of Gard. The risk represented by a victory for the National Rally, especially with an absolute majority, is great. I have therefore decided not to maintain my candidacy.”

“We must vote for the Republic”

She explains her position: “With this gesture, it is out of the question for me to join a party that has chosen communitarianism and economic irresponsibility. With this gesture, it is about voting for the Republic which is a common treasure by defeating the extreme right. To the inhabitants of Nîmes and its territory whose municipal elected officials have shone with astonishing discretion while the fate of our country is at stake, I say see you soon to roll up our sleeves and repair our Republic: I have courage, hope and ambition for our city. And even if this choice is difficult for me, it has sealed between us the beginning of a common adventure that is only just beginning.”

reaction of Yoann Gillet

Yoann Gillet, the outgoing RN MP who came out on top on Sunday with 43.91% of the vote, was quick to react in a press release to Valérie Rouverand’s withdrawal, as he finds himself in a duel with LFI’s Charles Menard (NFP): I call on all voters who do not want to see the extreme left, which is dangerous for our economy and irresponsible for France (represented in our constituency by LFI), come to power in France to mobilize behind my candidacy in the second round.
The election of an LFI deputy in 2024 would also be a risk of seeing Nîmes fall back into the hands of the far left in 2026, as was the case in 1995 with the results that we know.”
