Pierre Ducasse: “That’s why I stopped and why I wasn’t really attracted to football anymore”

For Vince Orsola, the former Girondins de Bordeaux midfielder, Pierre Ducasse, gave an example of an arbitration injustice that he experienced during his career. This was during his time at US Lège-Cap Ferret. This is also what made him stop playing football.

“I felt it more at the amateur level. I find that the impact is even greater. Ultimately, the level of refereeing is correlated with the level of the players. An R1 referee could not have the same level as the referee appointed for the Dortmund-Real Madrid final. And the players who are on the pitch, inevitably, are going to be better than those who play in R1. When I stopped the professional world and arrived in the amateur world, I didn’t necessarily see a difference because in the end I think I had the same level as the people I played with, I didn’t didn’t feel better than them otherwise I would have stayed higher. On the other hand, I find that the impact on the investment over a week, when you work, you have children, you go to train in the evening at 7:30 p.m. four times a week, you come home at 10 p.m. and that you don’t see your children because they are in bed, and that you are only waiting for one thing, that is to say Saturday and the match because your children are coming to see you… When you have the feeling of to be powerless in the face of refereeing decisions, in relation to the context, a house referee because you are going to play in a neighborhood in Aubagne or something like that… I know it is not easy for the referee, but you wonder why are you doing all that, you don’t want to play football if it’s to be fooled like that… We played in full confinement, in 32th of the Coupe de France final with Lège, in Aubagne… There was everyone around, the pressure… I like these atmospheres, but it will undoubtedly happen… The goalkeeper received stones… We have the possibility of playing a 16th final of the Coupe de France, you make a lot of sacrifices, you leave by bus… You tell yourself all that for that… It’s not easy for the referees, but I find that amateur football is super hard there- above, where there is no frame. The referees are helpless and are powerless compared to the pressure that some can put on them… In 80% of cases, everything goes well, but the proportion of non-compliance and on the purely football side increases. There were lots of aspects that I didn’t like and that’s why I stopped and wasn’t really attracted to football anymore. There were a lot of things that were beyond me.”
