“The unexpected did not happen”: behind the scenes of the meeting between the Pope and victims of sexual abuse

The meeting, which was only supposed to last an hour, lasted two. The Pope showed himself, according to the witness interviewed, to be very attentive and affected by the victims’ stories of abuse. But taking responsibility remains insufficient.

CIt was behind the doors of the interdiocesan center, in the heart of Brussels, that the Pope met in complete confidentiality with fifteen victims – some call themselves survivors – of sexual abuse committed within the Church. The place is austere, but the staff is willing to ensure that the victims can speak calmly with the press if they wish. The meeting, which was supposed to last no more than an hour, ultimately lasted more than two hours.
