On Sunday night, Tadanobu Asano received the Golden Globe Award for Best Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role on Television for his portrayal of Kashigi Yabushige in FX and Hulu’s Shōgun.
During his acceptance speech, Asano introduced himself modestly to the attendees and viewers at home, saying, “Maybe you don’t know me. I’m an actor from Japan, and my name is Tadanobu Asano. Wow!”
It was evident he wasn’t expecting to take home top honors while competing in the same category as Javier Bardem (Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story), Harrison Ford (Shrinking)Jack Lowden (Slow Horses), Diego Luna (The Machine) and Ebon Moss-Bachrach (The Bear).
He revealed he attended the awards gala while on a small break from shooting and will return to set tomorrow, though the project was not revealed. A second season of Shōgun was confirmed last year and is expected to begin filming in 2025. Asano will not return, however, as his character died in Season 1.
“This is a very big present for me,” he excitedly told the crowd, who matched his high energy.
Asano’s celebration follows the historical drama’s lead actor Hiroyuki Sanada’s win for Best Performance by a Male Actor in a Television Drama Series. The show was also recognized in September winning Emmy Awards in 18 categories including Outstanding Drama Series. Asano received his first Emmy nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series.
