TGV ticket prices will increase (again)

TGV tickets will cost more this year. Their price will increase by 1.5% on average from January 8, SNCF Voyageurs announced this Tuesday, January 7. This increase is slightly lower than inflation, expected at 1.7% in 2025, according to INSEE. The minimum prices remain unchanged, as do the prices of the Avantage and Liberté cards and the reductions to which they give entitlement. Prices will increase, however, for the maximum rates, with an increase of between 1 and 7 euros.

As a reminder, SNCF uses the « yield management » to set its prices. This technique makes it possible to adjust prices according to the train occupancy rate. There are between 15 and 20 price levels on the TGV, depending on demand and “it’s only the last levels that will move”assured the director of TGV-Intercités at SNCF Voyageurs, Alain Krakovitch, during an exchange with journalists. On average, prices will increase by “less than one euro per ticket”he assured, and “one in two tickets will be sold for less than 47 euros”.

The Junior et Cie service will increase

The price of Intercités will increase slightly more, by 1.9% on average, while the Junior et Cie service, which offers support to children traveling without their parents, will also be more expensive. The ticket price for this service will be increased by an average of 3 euros depending on the destinations and the package, revalued by 1 euro. “It hadn’t been increased in years”underlined Alain Krakovitch.

The latter insisted on the need to increase prices to finance investments such as extending the lifespan of 104 trains or the purchase of 115 new generation TGV M, while protecting the purchasing power of travelers.

“The inflation of our costs and tolls should be 3% in 2025 for the TGV”he indicated, which is twice as much as the price increase imposed. The price of the TGV has appreciated by 8% over the last five years, compared to 55% for the plane (on domestic routes) and 18% for inflation in general, recalled Alain Krakovitch. Last year, the increase in prices was 2.6%. In 2024, around 130 million people took the TGV, which posted record occupancy rates. They reached 84% for the TGV Inoui and almost 91% for the Ouigo.
