Relatives of the boy came en masse to the place where it happened. Emotions among family members ran high after the tragedy. He allegedly tried to light a cobra, but after it did not go off, he tried to detonate the illegal fireworks for a second time. That would have happened immediately while the teenager still had it in his hands.

The teenager’s body, which is said to have been terribly damaged, lies on a tram track. A white tent has been placed over it for further investigation. The boy died around half past eight in the evening.

A police spokeswoman says she has few details to report yet. “The investigation is still ongoing and it must be done carefully,” she reports. It is also not yet clear whether the boy was in possession of fireworks himself or whether he received them from someone else. The police assume that the boy is the only victim of this tragic accident.

Earlier in the day, a 13-year-old boy was also seriously injured after setting off fireworks in Kamperland, a village in the Dutch province of Zeeland. The teenage boy himself is said to have fired a dangerous ‘Cobra 6’.
