Next to 14 years after release of Minecraftthe famous legendary construction game which is to this day, the best-selling video game in history (but no longer profitable) with 300 million copies sold, could have the right to its sequel. Indeed, it is in a long post on his Twitter account (X), that Notchthe creator of the license just announced the sequel, Minecraft 2. Or at least, its spiritual sequel. Because yes, Notch has plus license rights.
Minecraft 2 in project?
Available for almost 14 years, Minecraft is currently the best-selling video game in history with more than 300 million copies sold on no less than 18 platforms ! He is ahead Grand Theft Auto V and its 210 million games sold, which is winning the title of highest grossing cultural entertainment product of history with more than 10 billion dollars revenue since its release in September 2013.
The common point between GTA V et Minecraftis that they both had the right to very long longevity. GTA 6the next installment in the series Grand Theft Auto has been waiting for over 12 years old and should arrive, if all goes well, at the end of the year. And on the side of Minecraft, no sequel has ever been announced since the release of the first game on November 18, 2011. At least, until this weekend.
In a long post on his X account, Notch, the creator of Minecraft states: “I basically announced Minecraft 2”. In the rest of his message, he explains that after many years of reflection, he had decided to create the sequel to Minecraft. Or, rather, the spiritual sequel, since the latter no longer owns the license and does not work at Mojang.
He then affirms that he will create a spiritual sequel, well motivated to meet player expectations. He also confirms that he is very respectful of Mojang’s work and intends to be honest and make this sequel “so as not to sneakily encroach on their work”.
I practically announced Minecraft 2.
I thought maybe people really wanted me to make another game very similar to the first one, and I love working on games again.
I don’t care which game I make first (or even if I make any more), but I know I’m making one, so I figured I’d absolutely be willing to give it a try. honest luck in the form of a spiritual successor to Minecraft, and I’ve put together a poll about it.
I intend to be clear and honest about this, saying that spiritual successors are usually a little… you know… washed out. Tragic. The things I fear my next game will be anyway and try to strive to avoid. So why not do what people WANT and are willing to give me, one way or another, even MORE money.
I intend to spend the money for good, but boy have I learned that I often fail. To win is to fail until you succeed.
So I intend to do this in a way that in no way tries to infringe on the incredible work of the Mojang team that Microsoft is having success with without doing shit.
And I respect them for that. It’s their job. And from what I understand, they let the studio do things their own way, which seems very fair to me.
Notch is therefore determined to develop its own version of Minecraft 2. For the moment, no more information on the subject. When will development begin? Will he be alone, or will he surround himself with a team? And when does he plan to come out? Will it be final version or early access? Only the future will tell us.
Notch, a highly controversial personality
Notch, whose real name is Markus Persson, is not really a person who is unanimous in the video game industry. Since 2016, the man has been especially noted for slip-ups on social networks regarding his social opinions. To cite just a few examples, in 2017 he simply proposed creating a heterosexual pride party and suggested that those who opposed the idea “deserved to be slaughtered”. A few years later, in March 2019, he affirmed that transidentity was a mental illnessby responding to a pro-transgender Internet user.
Also in 2017, he declared that feminism is also a “social illness” and does not hesitate to copiously insult the video game developer and feminist Zoë Quinn. He also confirms that, for him, intersectional feminism can be considered as a “framework for sectarianism” and the use of the word mansplaining as sexist.
After homophobia and sexism, Notch adds a little racism to his list, since again in 2017, he tweeted that “It’s good to be white”affirming his belief that privilege was a “invented metric”.
Today, Markus « Notch » Persson is no longer widely regarded in the video game industry. In 2019, Microsoft withdraws a large part of his credits in the gameMinecraft and the latter was not invited at the game’s 10th anniversary party. A Mojang spokesperson will speak confirming that Markus Persson’s political and societal ideas did not reflect the ideas at all they Mojang and Microsoft.
