Netflix warned some of its subscribers by email that its platform would soon no longer be available on certain media. These are the boxes Apple TV 2nd and 3rd generation, launched on the market in 2010 and 2012 respectively. The devices in question were certainly released more than 10 years ago, but are still used by many owners. From July 31, 2024, the Netflix application will no longer work on it.

The video on demand streaming service justifies itself by indicating that this decision makes it possible to “maintain the best Netflix experience possible” allocating more resources to devices that can support the latest app features and updates.

Netflix shuns old Apple TV models

Remember that these two models are considered obsolete by Apple, which is no longer developing updates for them. The 2nd and 3rd generation Apple TVs do not even run under tvOS like the most recent boxes from the Apple brand, but under a derivative of iOS. The terminals do not even have access to the App Store, not having storage space dedicated to downloads. It is therefore not possible to install new applications there.

Netflix recommends that users who still use the 2nd or 3rd generation Apple TV renew their equipment, switching to a more modern Apple TV, a Smart TV, a box or a TV dongle… The SVOD service remains normally accessible from the 4th generation Apple TV (Apple TV HD) and Apple TV 4K.

In addition, Apple will announce new features for tvOS 18 during WWDC on June 10. On the other hand, it is not expected that a new Apple TV will hit the market soon. The American firm is reportedly working on a new, more ambitious model, with an onboard camera for making FaceTime calls and for gesture navigation.
