This new ‘magical’ wireless feature can save your iPhone 16

iOS 18 comes with a bunch of features to customize your iPhone. One of them is that it will allow you to easily recover your iPhone 16 if it goes into “recovery mode.” All wirelessly, thanks to a little sleight of hand from Apple.

While Apple Intelligence is still awaited in Europe and , the release of iOS 18 still brings its share of interesting features. One of them, inspired by other Apple initiatives, allows you to easily restore your iPhone 16.

Restore your wireless device

Highlighted by 9to5Macthe iPhone 16 running iOS18 integrates a system called “Recovery OS” that allows users to restore the firmware of their device from another iPhone or iPad, all wirelessly. If your device freezes and goes into “recovery mode”, simply place your blocked device next to a “healthy” device, the device will then download a new firmware on the blocked device.

You will no longer need to have a Mac or PC to fix these firmware issues.

Any device running iOS 18 will allow you to restore a frozen device. For this one, however, Apple only seems to be dedicating this function to the iPhone 16. 9to5Mac indicates that the iPhone 16 has a special recovery partition that allows this function.

Without any official guidance from Apple, it’s unclear whether it’s actually a hardware restriction that’s preventing this feature from rolling out to other devices in the lineup.

An arrival that is being prepared

While the features of iOS 18 are tempting, it’s worth remembering that a major OS update like this is coming soon. If you don’t have a device to recover your previous firmware, you should back up your data.

We have prepared a dedicated article for you to perform this backup step by step to recover your device in the event of a problem.
