Contested duels expected in the European League – all the information at the start

The European season starts for the Cadets with today’s home game against Benfica Lisbon. Kriens, on the other hand, has already played two qualifying games. But because they played this against league rivals GC Amicitia Zurich, things are only really becoming “international” for them today. All information about the two games can be found here.

Cadets Schaffhausen – SL Benfica Lisbon

Not an easy start for the Schaffhausen team: In the 2021/22 season, the Portuguese triumphed in the final of the European League against Nikola Portner and SC Magdeburg and secured the title. Her extensive international experience makes her the favorite in the duel against the cadets. Nevertheless, the Schaffhausen team sold themselves dearly in the season before last (2022/23) with two very narrow victories against Benfica. A high-class, intense and extremely exciting duel between the two teams is expected. It starts at 6:45 p.m. in the BBC Arena in Schaffhausen.

HC Kriens-Luzern – Ademar Leon

Kriens’ Spanish opponent is back on the international stage for the first time since the 2021/22 season. At that time they failed in the qualifying round against BM Logroño La Rioja and missed out on making it to the group stage. However, Ademar León has already gained Champions League experience in previous years and should not be underestimated. This is Kriens’ second European season in a row; last year they were able to gain valuable experience against strong opponents in the group stage. A competitive duel is also expected between these two teams. The game will kick off at 6:45 p.m. in the Kriens town hall.

Since last year, the group phase has consisted of 32 teams, which are divided into eight groups of four participants each. In the group stage, 6 games will be played, one home and one return game against each team. The best two teams from each group then move on to the main round. In the main round, the 16 teams are again divided into four groups, where the group winner advances directly to the quarter-finals. The teams in 2nd and 3rd place in the main round compete against each other in the knockout system in the home and away games. The respective winners also qualify for the quarterfinals.
