“Every game depends on the circumstances and can sometimes take an unexpected turn. That’s what’s exciting and that’s the part that no one can predict. We have to find our best level, and I think we can. Slovakia is a very well-coached team and they have a clear playing identity.”

Southgate knows improvement is needed against Slovakia but says “the team responded very well” after a disappointing group stage. “It wasn’t closer than we thought. We knew all four teams could take points against each other,” he said. “It shows the level of European football. We haven’t reached our best yet, but we finished top of the group and now we need to improve faster than the other teams.”

Slovakia coach Francesco Calzona believes England have the best team in the Euros and could become “unbeatable” if they start playing as a team. “I think if England perform well as a group they will become unbeatable,” Calzona said. “We have to make the most of everything they concede but we have to be very careful because they have a high-quality team. I think they have the best team in the Euros because they have physicality, technique and creativity.”
