An unrestricted free agent at the end of the season, Dallas Stars forward and captain Jamie Benn prefers to focus on the upcoming campaign than on possible contract negotiations.

This is what Jim Nill, the general manager of the Texan team, confided in an interview with the daily Dallas Morning News. The 66-year-old recently approached his player to discuss the terms of a new deal, but Benn’s response was unequivocal.

“I asked him, ‘Do you want to start talking about the future?’ He was very clear: ‘Jim, I just want to win this year and make decisions from there,’” he explained.

That said, Nill has no doubt: Benn will not look elsewhere and will sign an extension to stay in Texas.

“My plan as long as I’m the general manager here is that he will be a Dallas Star,” Nill continued. He has earned this right. I think the first thing is are they still performing at the level they should? And Jamie did it.”

Benn spent his entire career with the Stars, having been drafted by the organization in 2007. In 1,112 games with the team, he amassed 383 goals and 524 assists for 907 points, also winning the Art Trophy. -Ross, awarded to the top scorer in the National Hockey League, in 2015.

He signed an eight-year contract in July 2016, valued at $9.5 million per season.
