The basketball world is in mourning. Dikembe Mutombo, one of the greatest defenders in NBA history, died this Monday, September 30, 2024. Aged 58, the retired basketball player died from brain cancer. Born on June 25, 1966 in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo, Mutombo left his mark on the NBA for 18 seasons.

Known for his exceptional defensive skills, he was voted Defensive Player of the Year four times and was selected to the All-Star Game eight times. Off the field, Mutombo was also recognized for his humanitarian commitment. He founded the Dikembe Mutombo Foundation in 1997, aiming to improve living conditions in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Its hospital, Biamba Marie Mutombo Hospital, has provided medical care to thousands of people since 2017.

The disappearance of Dikembe Mutombo leaves a huge void in the world of sport and beyond. His contributions, both sporting and humanitarian, will continue to inspire future generations.
