Around the NHL: News from Mike Hoffman, Nick Foligno, Sabres

The Edmonton Oilers have signed former Montreal Canadiens forward Mike Hoffman to a professional tryout contract, the National Hockey League team announced Wednesday.

Hoffman spent last season with the San Jose Sharks, scoring 10 goals and 13 assists in 66 games.

He had played the previous two campaigns with the CH, scoring 29 goals and obtaining 40 assists in 134 games.

Hoffman has 228 goals and 259 assists in 745 games with the Ottawa Senators, Florida Panthers, St. Louis Blues, Canadiens and Sharks.

Foligno named Blackhawks captain

Nick Foligno has been named captain of the Chicago Blackhawks.

Foligno succeeds Jonathan Toews, who wore the “C” from 2008 to 2023. A 17-year veteran, Foligno will be in his second campaign with the Blackhawks.

He scored 17 goals and had 20 assists in 74 games last season.

A first-round pick – 28th overall – of the Senators in 2006, Foligno has 232 goals, 330 assists and 932 penalty minutes in 1,155 NHL games with the Senators, Columbus Blue Jackets, Toronto Maple Leafs, Boston Bruins and Blackhawks.

New captain soon for the Sabres

The Buffalo Sabres will name a captain next month when the team begins its regular season in Europe, general manager Kevyn Adams said.

The Sabres have been without a captain since Kyle Okposo was traded to the Panthers before the trade deadline. Okposo has worn the “C” since 2022.

The Sabres will play their first two games against the New Jersey Devils on Oct. 4-5 in Prague, Czech Republic. They will finish their preseason schedule in Germany against Red Bull Munich on Sept. 27.

The Sabres’ new captain will become the 21st in team history. Jack Eichel wore the “C” before Okposo from 2018 to 2021. Rasmus Dahlin and Alex Tuch were Okposo’s assistants last season.
