“Anyone can be president of the United States”: Americans are proud of this adage. On Thursday night, we could see its relevance during the televised Trump-Biden debate.
On the one hand, an egocentric, ignorant and depraved sociopathic megalomaniac criminal spouted lies and fantastic boasts.
On the other, an old man was mumbling such incoherent remarks that he himself, from repetitions to redundancies interspersed with hesitations, could no longer find any meaning in what he was saying. In a crucial debate for his re-election, Joe Biden was talking about his successes on the golf course!
Confused, he concluded his speech by muttering: “We finally beat Medicare,” the American health insurance program that Democrats are defending against Republican attacks.
I suggest that if he had had to appear in court, he probably would have been found unfit to stand trial on the grounds of mental unfitness.
A smiling Trump emerged victorious from the debate, despite his diarrhea of lies and incoherent rants that the two CNN moderators did not bother to point out.
So this is where the United States, the leading power on the planet… and our immediate neighbor, have reached. May God protect us!
Those responsible for the disaster
Biden demonstrated during the debate that he no longer has the mental acuity to perform the presidential functions. Fortunately, he is surrounded in the White House by lucid, competent and effective people. This is why the country survives – as best it can – despite his cognitive deficiencies. This will no longer be the case if Trump wins, given his entourage of docile and servile executors, ready to implement his extreme right-wing agenda.
L’establishmentDemocrat has known about Biden’s cognitive decline for ages and should have taken steps to prevent him from running again. Doing it now is going to be extremely difficult.
Another chance that the debate took place now, rather than during the weeks preceding the presidential election, as is usually the case.
Some Democratic organizers and donors began plotting to get Biden to step down. If it happens, it must be decided in the coming days. It would be surprising if they succeeded. It may already be too late to stop Trump from winning. Yet this is the only way to save the country. Otherwise, goodbye democracy and welcome Trumpet fascism.
The process to replace Biden would be complicated and open the door – much to the delight of Republicans – to major rifts among Democrats between now and the August Convention. Already the catastrophic humiliation of Biden in the debate has made elected officials and Democratic voters increasingly nervous, “as if they were walking towards their own funeral,” said a facetious commentator.
Convince Biden to leave
If Biden decides to leave the race, he will have the support of his wife Jill who, in my opinion, will help him resist the pressures. She encouraged him to run again.
Jill Biden is not the first wife of a president to play an important role alongside him. When Alzheimer’s disease began to cloud Ronald Reagan’s mind, Nancy Reagan made decisions for him with the help of her astrologer, Joan Quigley.
In Atlanta on Friday, it was moving to see Jill Biden help her frail husband leave the debate by reassuring him with a white lie as if he were a child: “Joe, you did a good job! You answered all the questions, you knew all the facts!”
