The couple had been married for just over three years and had a two-year-old daughter at the time of the incident. Mutual jealousy had crept into their daily lives. One evening, while Ramazan Sagdis was bathing his daughter, his wife grabbed his phone and started looking through his conversations. She discovered a conversation with a certain Ibrahim (who was later revealed to be a woman named Manuela), to whom her husband had sent messages such as “I love you so much.” She took a screenshot, sent it to herself and waited a while to confront him.

Several episodes of violence reported

It was during this confrontation that the defendant’s wife said she had suffered domestic violence. He denies it.

At the hearing, other scenes of violence were mentioned. After one of them, a doctor saw her and noted “a contusion at the cervical level compatible with domestic violence”. Another doctor also gave her 5 days of incapacity to work, based on the psychological impact. At the hearing, he mentioned recurring pains of his wife.

But a few days later, another doctor said there was no bruise. “So this previous medical certificate is not enough,” said Lisa Valette for the defense.

At the hearing, the defendant assured that the couple would separate. “We’re going to divorce, that’s for sure.”

He only acknowledges one episode of violence: “My only violent gesture was this slap. I hit her because she had a knife in her hand.” The defense lawyer, Me Lisa Valette, continues: “It was an act of defense.”

He has already been to prison

The magistrates refer to the defendant’s criminal record. It bears a record of a conviction for kidnapping. At the time, he had been sentenced to a prison term and had been incarcerated.

The public prosecutor, Alix Matras, had requested a four-month prison sentence with a two-year probationary period. But the court considered that doubts remained. Ramazan Sagdis was acquitted.
