The Mannschaft snatched first place in Group A from Switzerland (1-1) with a view to the round of 16, which the Hungarians dream of playing after their victory against Scotland (1-0).

Germany almost suffered a real setback this Monday. Even already qualified for the round of 16 of “its” Euro, the Mannschaft expected to build up confidence and maintain the lead of Group A to get a round of 16 in their hands. Alas, its players, with a clumsiness worthy of that of France against the Netherlands, did not know how to realize their territorial domination and they only had to snatch a goal in stoppage time. draw (1-1) which allows them to finish in pole position.

However, the Mannschaft entered the match rather well. Dominant, she even thought she had done the hard part by opening the scoring with a long shot from Robert Andrich whose rebound deceived the Swiss goalkeeper, Yann Sommer (18th). But at the start of the action, Jamal Musiala was guilty of a delayed foul on Michel Aebischer which the VAR did not let pass. Goal canceled and… big consequences for the host country of the competition which, ten minutes later, was surprised by the first offensive worthy of the name from the Swiss players. Quicker than Jonathan Tah, Dan Ndoye burst out and narrowly deceived Manuel Neuer (0-1, 29th).

Switzerland dominated but…

An advantage that the Swiss maintained until the break against a German team which monopolized the ball (68% of ball possession at the break) and multiplied the shots off target (six out of the seven attempted). A lack of realism which would continue in the second half. On a brilliant inspiration from Florian Wirtz, Jamal Musiala saw his shot being repelled by a solid Sommer this time, before Ilkay Gundogan completely missed his recovery (51st). A contentious intervention in the area on Joshua Kimmich did not result in the penalty hoped for by most of the audience at the Frankfurt Arena (70th).

No for Vargas, yes for Füllkrug

Julian Nagelsmann tried, through numerous substitutions, to wake up his troops. In vain, a slight offside from Ruben Vargas even deprived Switzerland of the break goal in the 83rd minute. Before Manuel Neuer made a capital save in the 88th minute of play on a powerful strike from Granit Xhaka. The symbol, however, that the 2-0 was closer than the 1-1 during the too messy end of the match for the Germans. And then Niclas Füllkrug, with an improbable header, snatched the draw in stoppage time (1-1, 90+2nd) and consolidated his status as an oh-so-valuable replacement. An outcome that is both logical and… unexpected.

Hungary waiting

In the other meeting, Scotland and Hungary almost ended with a draw which would not have really suited anyone. Starting with the Hungarians who already saw themselves finishing last in the group and could regret that Willi Orban saw his attempt fail on the opposing crossbar shortly before half-time (41st). Scottish goalkeeper Angus Gunn also made a good save on a tense strike from Bendeguz Bolla (8th). But in the 9th minute of stoppage time, Kevin Csoboth delivered his own (1-0, 90+9th). Now third with three points, Hungary must now wait for the results of the other groups to see if they will finish among the four best thirds to see the round of 16. Scotland can go home.
