On October 15, 16 and 17, 2024, Senegal vibrated with the African Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Week. This initiative, supported by the Next Einstein Forum (NEF) and the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS), brought together young people, experts and development actors to advance the SDGs by 2030. The Hewlett Foundation was crucial for this event.

Inspiring Initiatives

The first day was filled with dynamic exchanges and capacity building sessions. Young people explored the issues related to achieving the SDGs. Many discussions focused on Senegal’s current state in achieving the SDGs, the role of space technology in sustainable development and the importance of environmental preservation.

Speakers showed how entrepreneurship, energy innovations and human capital development can transform the African economy. Interactive demonstrations also captivated students, who learned how to build solar systems and learn about robotics and coding. These activities illustrated the role of technology in solving local challenges.

The week also highlighted inspiring initiatives. A group of women presented local produce processing and micro-gardening projects, showing how local solutions can help achieve the SDGs.

Clear Objectives for Collective Mobilization

The main objective of this Africa Week is to raise awareness of the SDGs among underserved groups, such as youth and women, and accelerate their participation. The event aims to bring together all key stakeholders — public, private organizations and civil society — to discuss the essential role of young people in achieving the SDGs.

Specific objectives include

Highlight youth initiatives: Present innovative projects developed by young Africans to address the challenges linked to the SDGs.

Empowering young people: Providing a platform to share experiences and ideas, promoting dialogue between peers and stakeholders.

Facilitate inclusive partnerships: Encourage collaboration between youth organizations, civil societies, governments and businesses to amplify impact.

Inspire collective action: Catalyze commitment to the SDGs through concrete examples of youth-led innovation.

Promote inclusiveness: Ensure representation of all youth groups, including those from marginalized communities.

A Call to Action

The African SDG Week was a strong moment of commitment and innovation. By mobilizing young people around these crucial issues, it has laid the foundations for a sustainable future for Africa. The discussions and initiatives during these days will continue to inspire a generation to actively engage in building a better world.
