Three people have fallen from an overloaded boat en route to the UK, with one found to be hypothermic and taken to hospital.

A migrant rescue operation was carried out off the coast of Berck-sur-Mer in Pas-de-Calais. Since 6am this Saturday, September 7, the National Sea Rescue Society (SNSM) has been actively searching for three men who fell into the water after boarding a boat overloaded with 70 to 80 migrants to try to reach the United Kingdom, from the central beach of Berck. One person was rescued in a state of hypothermia and transferred to the Rang-du-Fliers hospital. The other two have not been found. The area having been “fully investigated”, the maritime prefect of the Channel and the North Sea has decided to “interrupt the search”. An investigation has been opened by the Boulogne-sur-Mer public prosecutor’s office.

The boat was not stopped. “She is being followed by a team from the Cross (Regional Operational Centre for Surveillance and Rescue, Editor’s note). The SNSM is continuing the search to recover the migrants who have fallen into the water and is monitoring the possible departure of a second boat.”indicated to the Figaro Vincent Masselot, president of the SNSM. Indeed, a second boat also tried this Saturday morning to leave a beach north of Berck. Its departure was aborted due to the intervention of the police. A helicopter from the French Navy is participating in the search for migrants from the first boat.

This week was marked by the sinking of a boat off Cap Gris-Nez, 55 km from Berck, on Tuesday, September 3. Twelve migrants, including ten women and minors, were found dead.
