The Dutchman Lars van der Haar is one of the world's best cyclo-cross specialists and this weekend in Belgium, he proved that he is also a tough guy. While fighting for victory with competitors of the caliber of Wout Van Aert, the 33-year-old rider fell heavily during the 5th lap of the Superprestige Gullegem, contested in particularly muddy conditions. His right shoulder suffered and was dislocated.
This mishap did not stop the Dutchman, who finished 10th in this event. But to be able to continue, he had to put his shoulder back in place. To do this, he used the saddle of his bicycle as a lever.
In the images, we first see the cyclist struggling to raise his arm before placing it on the saddle of his bike and realigning his shoulder. He then pushed his body weight down, against his frame, to snap the misplaced joint back into place. After the race, Van der Haar said that it was not his day, because “it took me a long time to put it back together.”
This is not the first time the crossman has had to use this method. Last season, he experienced a similar incident during the Superprestige Niel. So he knows how to do it.
