You sleep, they work: technicians on the A16 (8/9)

While some sleep, others are at work, the opposite is also true… La Matinale invites you to discover these night-time jobs. A weekly series that meets you every Tuesday around 7:15 a.m. on RFJ and RFJ.ch. /mmi-male

Episode 8: technicians on the A16

This week, we are going to the A16 motorway… closed. On site, in Choindez, traffic is interrupted to allow work to take place in the tunnels. But the technician in the BG Consulting Engineer office Cédric Maître welcomed Michel Leoni at the wheel of his vehicle to discover what types of work are being carried out on the A16.

Episode 7: the journalists

They wake up shortly after 3 a.m. to inform you: the journalists from La Matinale go to the RFJ editorial office at 4 a.m. to learn about the night’s news in particular. A schedule that involves certain constraints, notably going to bed early the night before. The good part is to work in peace and to tell yourself that you wake up the listeners. Another advantage is that the working day ends around noon.

Episode 6: the security guard

The protection of people is their priority: security agents are active on different sites at night, particularly in nighttime parties or around different companies which mandate them. Sometimes the nights are calm for the security guards, but sometimes they are more hectic, according to Aulon Gashi who has been active for five years.

Episode 5: the operator

The 5th episode of our series takes you to discover the industry… An appointment is made in the industrial zone of Delémont, very quiet shortly after 9 p.m. However, light is clearly visible through the windows of Preci-Dip, a company specializing in the manufacturing of electronic components found for example in cell phones or electric cars. And at that time, the night shift workers start work. Marceline Michon met up with a colleague on Monday evening, Nadia Schmassmann, an operator with the company for 24 years and who has worked night shifts for several years. A schedule that she particularly likes and wouldn’t trade for anything in the world, she who appreciates calm and is content with four hours of sleep a day.

Episode 4: the bus driver

Attention and vigilance are qualities required to bring passengers safely to their port when darkness has arrived. Bus drivers sometimes work at night, especially when they drive the Noctambus in the Jura. This is the case, for example, of Claude Cattin who brings Ajoulot travelers and revelers from Porrentruy back to their communities of residence. Although he admits that the journeys are sometimes lively, Claude Cattin has never really experienced any discipline problems within his bus and he appreciates the returns punctuated by songs and anecdotes…

Episode 3: the policeman

Like the nurses, they too must be on the lookout all night. The gendarmes are responsible for the safety of Jura residents, including when the majority are sleeping. They carry out patrols and are sent on different interventions depending on emergency calls made to the central, at 117. Sometimes, they also carry out office tasks. However, the hired agents are always available and must react tit for tat. According to one of them, Jérémy Bögli, the action of the gendarmes is not the same during the day as during the night. Knowing that the night shift extends from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m., another gendarme, Jérémie Crausaz, indicates that it is important to adapt your sleep and diet to meet the expectations of the role.

Episode 2: the nurse

The corridors are deserted… or almost. If the emergency department remains busy in the middle of the night, the other floors of the Jura Hospital in Delémont are generally quieter. The fact remains that several dozen caregivers are active all night to provide care and sometimes reassure patients. This is the case of nurse Kelly Varela and community health care assistant Prisca Piquerez who work from 9:30 p.m. to 7:30 a.m. They manage their tasks and their permanence in pairs and thus form close bonds. Both have their rituals for staying awake and resting during the day.

Episode 1: the baker

While Delémont is still asleep at 5 a.m., a good smell emanates from a bakery in the old town where around ten bakers are busy in the heat of the ovens. Marceline Michon introduces you to this nighttime profession with baker Romain Talaya who works from half past midnight to around 9:30 a.m. making bread and pastries. “I’ve been doing this for almost 10 years, the rhythm is there,” assures the baker who sleeps twice, a few hours in the afternoon then a few hours in the evening.
