The average milk price fell very slightly in the European Union of 27 between March and April 2024. It lost 3 euros per tonne to reach 460.9 €/t (-0.6%). On the other hand, it is 3% lower than its level in April 2023.

The European Commission anticipates a slight rebound in the average milk price in May 2024, to €462.20/t (+0.3%).

Slight drop in France

In France, the price of milk continues its slight decline and falls below the European average. It stood at €460.40/t in April 2024, a decrease of €5.30 compared to March. The decline is expected to continue in May, with an average price of €459.20/t anticipated by the European Commission. As a reminder, this is the average price paid to producers, including conventional, organic and PDO milk.

In most of our European neighbours, the trend is stable. In Germany, the price of milk is falling by €1 from one month to the next. It stood at €458.80/t in April, below the European average. In Ireland, the price fell from €431.20/t to €425.40/t between March and April. In the Netherlands, the March price gained €2.5 compared to March to stand at €467.5/t.

Butter still on the rise

On the fat market, the European price of butter continues its progression that began in the last quarter of 2023. “It passed the €6,000/t mark at the end of May to settle at €6,330/t at the end of May. last European listing of June 23, 2024.”

For its part, the price of lean powder is stabilizing after the slow decline that has been underway since the beginning of January. It stood at €2,380/t at the end of April and is set at €2,430/t at the end of May 2024.

The price of whey powder, the main co-product of cheese making, was €780/t at the end of April. It rose to €790/t at the end of June.
