43 years ago, this young actor took his first steps in the cinema, today, he is one of the most popular stars in Hollywood. Did you recognize him?

Today, audiences around the world – and especially western fans – all know him. The American actor and filmmaker Kevin Costner, who recently distinguished himself with the first opus of his fresco Horizon and his unforgettable role in the series Yellowstone, has left his mark on the history of cinema more than once.

A first role at the age of 26

When we review his prestigious and vast career, we obviously think of Dances with Wolves, an absolute masterpiece crowned with 7 Oscars in 1990 (including Best Director for Costner), but also of his performances in JFK by Oliver Stone, in The Untouchables by Brian de Palma, in Robin Hood, Prince of Thieves and Waterworld by Kevin Reynolds, in A Perfect World by Clint Eastwood or in Bodyguard opposite Whitney Houston.

In short, an impressive journey to say the least which nevertheless began (as is often the case) with much more modest productions. But what were Kevin Costner’s first steps on screen?

To find out, we have to go back to 1981, to a time when the young actor was still only 26 years old and was therefore on his very first film set: that of the independent comedy Malibu Hot Summer, which recounted the holidays of three young women living in California, in a house on the beach.

1.7 stars out of 5

Particularly poorly received upon its release, this feature film by Richard Brander in which Kevin Costner played the riding instructor of one of the three heroines, received a catastrophic spectator average of 1.7 stars out of 5 on AlloCiné.

Fun fact: several years later, when he was beginning to achieve fame, Costner allegedly tried to buy the rights to this first youthful mistake in order to destroy the original film… by burning it in a barbecue (according to an article in the New York Daily News).

Fortunately for him, only 6 years after Malibu Hot Summer, Kevin Costner played the leading role in a much more prestigious feature film by lending his features to Agent Eliot Ness in The Untouchables by Brian de Palma.
