Nicole Kidman, Zac Efron and Joey King star in the new Netflix movie “The Family Guy.” Should I watch it or skip it?

What is it about ?

An unexpected love story leads to very funny consequences for a young woman, her mother and the famous actor who employs her… Because here they are all three struggling with romantic relationships, sex and existential questions!

Who is it with?

Twelve years after Paperboy, in which they already fell in love with each other, Zac Efron and Nicole Kidman meet again thanks to Netflix. And it still creates so many sparks! If their duo works well on screen, Joey King is not left out and it is their joint performance that carries the film. Kathy Bates, who plays the grandmother, and Liza Koshy who plays the best friend complete this cast without a single false note.

Is it worth a look?

We didn’t expect much from Dessous de la famille, after Netflix’s recent disastrous releases such as Riposte (with Jessica Alba) and Atlas (with Jennifer Lopez). And the trailer unveiled a few weeks ago announced yet another comedy without substance and a bit of a schoolboy. And we were very wrong.

The translation chosen by Netflix in France is clearly the best possible: it is an intimate portrait of a mother and her daughter, who are trying to keep their heads above water. The first is a writer lacking inspiration, widowed for 11 years. The second is the assistant of a self-important movie star, who cannot assert herself to realize her dream.

Netflix

When Nicole Kidman’s character begins to mess with that of Zac Efron, the film does not question so much the age difference between the two but how two people, who have been looking for each other for years, manage to find each other despite what society said of them. And everything is handled with incredible fluidity, thanks to the performance of the two actors, more complicit than ever on screen.

The Underneath of the Family offers us some very beautiful moments of emotion, particularly between Kidman and Joey King. But also scenes of real laughter. Zac Efron excels in the role of the celebrity who is allowed everything, but who questions himself thanks to the love this mother has for him. If his comic timing is worth highlighting, it is also because the ultra-referenced scenario allows him to have fun without overacting.

If on paper, it is easy to compare The Bottom of the Family to the Prime Video romcom The Idea of Being With You (with Anne Hathaway) which deals with more or less the same subject, the two films are in reality quite distant. And the one from Netflix is well worth a look.
