A true esthete of the genre, Oz Perkins comes back with a new thriller, Longlegsin theaters on July 10, 2024. As usual, the American producer reveals a oeuvre arty who, by his dark and heavy atmosphere and his mystical flightmade us shivereffroi.

Nice Monroe (which we have seen too little since It Follows) plays Lee Harker, a talented FBI agent newly recruited by the government agency to conduct an investigation into a serial killer who has been officiating since 1975. Son mode of operation is most unusual: it is thought capable of convincing fathers to massacre all the members of their family. Eleven have already died inexcruciating sufferingbut the Killer remains elusive. The investigation quickly shifts towardsoccult when bonds are formed between the killer and the investigator.

From the very first scene (as great as terrifying) to music by T-RexOz Perkins lays the foundations for a film full of referenceswith its grainy texture and vivid zooms that pay homage to the 70s horror movies. A little blonde girl is approached, in her garden, by a frumpy man with a pale, puffy but strangely feminine face (Nicolas Cagewho merrily cavorts in this most excessive role).

This atmosphere at the HalloweenOz Perkins keeps it in all the scenes of flashbacks, in particular a shot filmed from the eyes of the little girl which recalls the iconic POV shot of Michael Myers as a child. But’police investigationstaged in a much more contemporary manner, rather evokes, in its colorimetry and its way of filming the work of investigation, the Zodiac by Fincher.

Maika Monroe finds herself stuck in American suburbs which seem emptied of any population, and as in David Robert Mitchell’s film where she was discovered by the general public, a large part of theangoisse is happening in the background of the image, in wide shot and in short focal length. Because if it is a thriller, Longlegs takes advantage of true springs of horror cinemaor even of theelevated horror (jumpscares and heavy work on the sound) which impose a quite unique atmosphere and will arouse, in some, a visceral jitters.
