Fez has been classified as a world heritage site by UNESCO since 1981.
Prestigious past: The city of Fez celebrated its 15th annual day on Saturday which coincides with January 4 each year, marking the anniversary of the laying of the first foundations of the city by Moulay Idriss II in 808.
Organized by the Yawm Fez Foundation (Fez Day), this day is a highlight for residents and lovers of the city, who come together to reaffirm their commitment to the Idrisid city under the slogan “Together for Fez: history of the past , evaluation of the present and anticipation of the future”.
The high point of this celebration was a conference held on Saturday at the Palais des Congrès. Representatives of the signatory institutions of the Fez Day declaration addressed topics related to the theme “Fez and the challenges of sustainable development”.
This meeting is an opportunity to take stock of the transformations underway in the spiritual capital of the Kingdom and to explore ways to guarantee harmonious and environmentally friendly development. The Foundation underlines the importance of the active participation of all citizens for the success of current projects and to restore the imperial city to its former glory.
Beyond the conference, an entire week of activities, from January 4 to 11, will highlight the heritage and future of the city. Thematic exhibitions, such as the one dedicated to innovation serving the city and the region at the Sidi Mohammed Ben Abdellah University, or the one on architecture, art and traditional crafts at the private University of Fez, will allow you to discover the multiple facets of Fez. A toponymic tour of the medina, as well as a special activity at the school for the blind in partnership with the National School of Architecture, are also on the program.
On January 11, a hike in the historic streets of the old medina of Fez will close the week. This symbolic march will coincide with the commemoration of the presentation of the Independence Manifesto, recalling the historical role of the city in the struggle for the independence of the Kingdom.
The closing day will be marked by the signing of a partnership agreement between the Jour de Fès Foundation and the Association of Alumni of Lycée Moulay Idriss, thus sealing the commitment of past and future generations to the city.
This week of events is considered, according to the organizers, as an invitation to renew the commitment to Fez, to celebrate its heritage and to build a promising future, combining tradition and modernity.
Celebrated at the initiative of numerous civil society associations active in the fields of heritage preservation, environmental protection and the dissemination of citizenship values, this annual day aims to examine and debate the mechanisms to even to concretize the commitments signed on January 4, 2011 to implement ambitious development projects and programs, bringing progress and prosperity for the city’s population.
Classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1981, the city of Fez tends to reconnect with its prestigious past and to highlight its ancestral heritage, its historical monuments, its borjs and its walls.
