A top Belgian club wants to repatriate Dante Vanzeir to JPL

Dante Vanzeir narrowly missed out on the United States championship title during the last MLS season. Despite this, the striker could already leave the New York Red Bulls. He could even make his return to Belgian territory.

Indeed, according to Het Nieuwsblad, La Gantoise is courting him. Vanzeir is a young product of KRC Genk, but he has failed to break through there, partly due to injuries. After being loaned to Beerschot and Mechelen, he joined the Union in 2020. He quickly established himself as a real goalscorer.

He notably helped the Brussels club win the D1B title and return to the highest level. After Union’s promotion, the striker immediately became one of the leading figures in the Jupiler Pro League. But while other stars like Deniz Undav and Casper Nielsen moved up the ranks, Vanzeir initially remained loyal to the runner-up. After six months, things changed.

A departure despite the final?

In fact, at the start of 2023, the attacker was transferred to the New York Red Bulls. The American adventure gets off to a difficult start after a riot linked to allegations of racism. But Vanzeir recovers and becomes a valuable pawn. With six goals and ten assists, he even helped his team qualify for the MLS final last season.

However, after the final lost to the LA Galaxy, rumors of departure immediately surfaced. Indeed, with Eric Choupo-Moting, New York had already acquired a real competitor for the attacker. In addition, Vanzeir weighs heavily on the salary budget, which is subject to strict regulations in the United States.

Ghent wants to take advantage of it

It is therefore possible that the Limburger opts for a return to Belgium. Indeed, Het Nieuwsblad reports that La Gantoise would try to convince him. The Buffalos are looking for a replacement for Max Dean, who is out until the end of the season with a serious injury. The transfer would be financially viable, as New York will not be too greedy. Vanzeir would also be happy with a move to the Planet Group Arena.
