The Ministry of the Interior announced the opening of applications for the presidency of the municipality of Essahel in Tangier. Files can be submitted until next Friday, reports the daily Al Akhbar in its edition of Monday January 6.
The Arabic-speaking daily underlines that keen competition is already perceptible in Tangier between almost all local parties to obtain this strategic position. According to the decision of the Ministry of the Interior, the deadline for submitting applications has been set for next Friday. These files must include official sponsorship from the candidate’s political party, a condition which aims to limit multiple candidacies within the same party, given the high number of contenders.
This situation follows a court decision rendered on December 19, leading to the dismissal of Abdelhamid El Kennouni. The latter, elected under the colors of the Constitutional Union, was relieved of his functions due to serious irregularities in the management of the municipality of Essahel.
According to forecasts ofAl Akhbarit seems unlikely that the presidency will escape the candidate of the National Rally of Independents (RNI), despite the presence of many other parties, from both the government majority and the opposition, which could form alliances to support another candidate.
What is certain is that the competition promises to be fierce, particularly because of the strategic importance of the municipality of Essahel. This is particularly coveted by land lobbies, who plan to take advantage of its status as a coastal municipality to develop lucrative real estate projects. Moreover, it is these same influential promoters who played a key role in the loss of his position by El Kennouni, accused of having favored certain promoters to the detriment of others.
