Ct has become an unmissable tradition, the first event of the Hollywood year is the Golden Globes ceremony. The 82e takes place this Sunday from 5 p.m. here, 2 a.m. in France… Very French Globes this year because there have never been so many nominations frenchies throughout the history of the ceremony. Thanks especially to a film: Emilia Perez. Jacques Audiard's film enters Globes legend with ten nominations. This is a first, never before has a French film done so well. not even The Artist which had garnered six nominations – and that was already remarkable. But here we are in very heavy situations.
Emilia Perez is nominated in the category of best film (comedies or musical films), best foreign film, best direction and best screenplay for Audiard, best actress for Karla Sofía Gascón, best supporting actress for Zoe Saldana and Selena Gomez and three nominations for Clément Ducol and Camille – one for the film's soundtrack and two others for the songs “Mi Camino” and “El Mal”.
A record year for French cinema
So it's huge for Emilia Perez, but it's not bad either for The Substance. Five nominations for Coralie Fargeat's film, best film (comedies or musical films, even if The Substance doesn't have much of a comedy or a musical, but hey…), best screenplay and direction for Coralie Fargeat herself, Demi Moore is nominated for best actress and Margaret Qualley for supporting actress.
Without forgetting the co-productions Flow, the cat who was no longer afraid of water in animation, as well as All We Imagine As Light et I'm still here in the foreign film category and Timothée Chalamet, after all half French, nominated for best actor for A complete stranger where he plays an excellent Bob Dylan.
2025 is already a record year for French cinema in Hollywood. A year that could become historic if the rabble of nominations is confirmed at the Oscars. But that's another story. Above all, it is much more difficult to get a nomination for the Oscars than for the Golden Globes. The Oscars bring together nearly 10,000 voters (9,905 to be precise), all film professionals. At the Golden Globes, there are 334. They are all film journalists. Well, almost.
Barely three years ago, the winners of the Globes were chosen by fewer than 80 members of an association, the HFPA, Hollywood Foreign Press Association, two-thirds of whom had long since retired. An association under fire from critics, and not far from the courts, for various farcical affairs, ranging from accusations of racism (there has never been a single black member in the association in some 80 years), to abuse of power over Hollywood journalists who were not part of their association (they did everything, in particular, to never let certain journalists enter their ranks), corruption too (certain studios knew how to “secure” the votes of certain members), not to mention various scandals #MeToo which we will hasten not to detail for you…
The Globes were therefore seriously threatened with disappearance. To save them, they were bought. The Golden Globes therefore represent today the first Hollywood awards ceremony that is also a commercial enterprise.
Todd Boehly, billionaire with “Trumpesque” methods, bought the Golden Globes brand, dissolved the HFPA, fired manu militari the most controversial members and those who could bother him in his future affairs, hired the remaining members (members employees whose main job is to vote for their favorite films and series, professional voters… A new concept!) and added around 300 “sub-members” who are not paid. They are certainly serious journalists but they are spread around the world. Which somewhat defies the original objective of the Globes which was to have Hollywood cinema judged by foreign journalists based in Hollywood. But hey, at least they're real journalists…
Golden Globes: the end of the scandals
So, yes, things are better, the choices are less “extravagant” than in the past, there are no more embarrassing scandals, even if there remains something uncomfortable about it… I'm probably old fashioned, but, in my opinion, institutions honoring the arts in all their forms, in this case cinema and television, should all remain non-profit. The Golden Globes set a dangerous precedent.
This evening, on the red carpet, we will be treated to the usual parade of stars, in an almost traditional chaos, which is also the charm of the Globes. The first glasses of champagne will welcome the guests at the end of the carpet. In the room, we will break the record for stars per square meter. The jokes of the presenter on stage, the comic Nikki Glaser, will not be very mean (since the Ricky Gervais years, we have been much more politically correct on the Golden Globes stage) and the prices will parade. In the comedies and musical films category, a duel is expected between Wicked et Emilia Perez, unlessAnora does not make everyone agree.

But, in dramatic films, the outcome seems completely unpredictable. No favorite stands out, which leaves every chance to my two little darlings: The Brutalist et September 5 on the hostage-taking at the Munich Olympic Games. Unless Conclave with Ralph Fiennes…
There will therefore be suspense and perhaps surprises this Sunday at the Beverly Hilton, the Beverly Hills hotel which is hosting the ceremony, even if we already know the big winner of the evening. His name is Todd Boehly, the man who owns the Golden Globes.
