We announced work worth more than 5 million euros at Cherbourg-en-Cotentin station (Manche) in our edition of December 29, 2023. This work were to take place from September 2024 to August 2025. They will only really begin mid-January 2025.

A project costing 5.26 million euros

“The accessibility of the platforms of Cherbourg station is scheduled for 2024. The start of the work is planned for September and it should end in August 2025”, explained at the time the communications department of Gares et Connexions of the Hauts-de- Regional Directorate which we requested at the time following a deliberation by the permanent commission of the Normandy Region.

This work is part of the Accessibility Master Plan for the Normandy region. These new facilities will allow people with reduced mobility, but also all travelers, to have easier access to trains. This work is the realization of the investments made by the State and the Normandy Region to further develop the train throughout the territory, in collaboration with SNCF Gares and Connexions.

Rainwater, lighting, speakers…

For a total amount which will exceed the tidy sum of 5.2 million eurosthe main works that will be carried out will be “the repair of the platform edges” and “the securing of passenger paths on the platforms” but also “the management of rainwater on the platforms; the removal and installation of dock furniture; bringing telecommunications equipment on the docks up to standard; bringing lighting on platforms up to standard (installation of lighting on platforms including canopies and platform shelters) and replacing loudspeakers and clocks. »

But a year after these announcements, nothing had apparently been done. Or almost. “Work on the platforms of Cherbourg station began in December. For the moment, it is a question of setting up the site installations,” replied the December 20 the communications manager of the Hauts-de-France Normandy Regional Directorate of SNCF Gares & Connexions.

Expected end in October 2025

“It is especially from mid-January that the work will be visible even if it will mainly take place at night to allow continued operation of the station during the day. Thus train circulation will be maintained,” he added, confirming what had been announced a year earlier. But the schedule slipped: “The work will end in October 2025.”

After the exterior square and the connection with the Homet gentleway are completed, Cherbourg-en-Cotentin station will therefore benefit from a complete makeover.

The photovoltaic shade project is no longer relevant.

In December 2022, we announced in our columns that the companies SNCF Gares & Connexions and Tenergie had joined forces to develop photovoltaic power plants in 119 French stations. Cherbourg station was one of the four sites selected for the Normandy region and will benefit from the installation of photovoltaic panels, installed on shade structures, on part of its parking lot by the end of 2024, informed the Hauts regional station management. -de-France – Normandy from SNCF Gares & Connexions.
