If tourism remains a essential pillar of the local economy, representing more than 15% of Cantal's GDP, the departmental tourism service disappears in favor of a reinforced communications service. This choice, dictated by the desire to remove duplicates and pool skills, will be effective from January 2025.
A reorganization in the service of efficiency
Faced with a drop in three million euros in revenuethe Department had to rethink its operation. Bruno Faure, president of the Departmental Council, explains: “The law requires us to have a service communication distinct du cabinet. By integrating certain functions of the tourism department into the communications department, we save money while remaining operational.
Already active in major events such as the Agricultural show or that of hiking, Cantal Destination takes over key missions from the former tourism service, such as observing attendance and territorial animation. The objective is to simplify the organization while preserving the quality of the offer.
A coherent strategy to enhance the territory
Philippe Fabre, departmental advisor in charge of sports and youth, summarizes the reform as follows: “With the same redeployed teams, we are strengthening our efficiency while respecting the legal constraints. Making Cantal an ever more visible destination remains a priority.” The Department is banking on a better coordination between the communications department, Cantal Destination and the sports and youth department.
Tourism: a major issue
Despite these adjustments, tourism remains a priority. With 145,000 tourist beds, including 35,000 commercial beds, and an average length of stay less than three daysthe economic potential is considerable. Attract and pamper visitors – often future inhabitants – is essential.
Didier Achalme, vice-president of Cantal Destination, underlines: “ A strategy clear and legible is essential. With a better consistencythe tools for promoting Cantal will be more efficient, and local partners will only see advantages.”
Towards an ever more attractive Cantal
Despite the elimination of the tourism service, service providers and players in the sector should not feel any negative impact. Cantal Destination will continue its programme d’actionsguaranteeing continuity of services and increased development of local resources. Cantal, with its brand and its unique landscapes, remains determined to establish itself as aunmissable destination.
