Afeela 1: the electric sedan from Honda and Sony finally reveals its prices and final design

After at least two years of teasing, the alliance between two Japanese giants, Honda and Sony, is taking shape with the imminent launch of their first electric sedan under the Afeela brand. The flagship model, the Afeela 1, is expected to arrive in 2026 as details regarding pricing and features begin to become clearer.

Announced for the first time in 2023 during CES in Las Vegas, Afeela is the result of a joint venture between Honda and Sony. The aim behind this surprising partnership is to combine Honda’s expertise in the automotive sector with Sony’s technological skills.

After several years of development, the duo is now unveiling a quasi-finalized version of the Afeela 1 electric sedan, intended to enter production next year.

A launch targeted at California

The initial launch of the Afeela 1 is planned for the North American marketbut more specifically for the state of California. This choice is not trivial: California is one of the most favorable states for electric cars thanks to its developed charging infrastructure and its encouraging environmental policies.

The sedan displays dimensions worthy of segment Ewith a length of 4.91 meters, a wheelbase of 2.99 meters and a trunk offering a generous capacity of 764 liters. Under the hood, there are two electric motors — one per axle — offering a combined power of 482 horsepower. Powered by a 91 kWh lithium-ion batterythe Afeela 1 promises a range of 482 kilometers according to approval standards.

However, even if fast charging is on the program, we are surprised that it is satisfied with a simple 150 kW of power. This is correct but on this type of sedan, the trend is towards 800 Volts and higher power for shortened charging times.

However, let’s wait for the final model to give an opinion.

In the meantime, the Afeela 1 platform is based on the new “0 Series” architecture developed by Honda for its next generation of electric cars. However, it is Sony which provides its high-tech added value by taking care of the software and on-board technologies.

The Japanese manufacturer promises an improved driving experience thanks to the integration of more than 40 sensors, including a LiDAR mounted on the roof, which will make it possible to offer level 2+ autonomous driving, initially, then level 3 in depending on the regulations.

High-end equipment

On board the Afeela 1, the interior emphasizes futuristic design and cutting-edge technology. The steering wheel adopts a particular “yoke” shape, inspired by robotics, which promises an immersive driving experience. The motion management system uses 3D technology combined with augmented reality, providing “intuitive” interaction between driver and vehicle. We will see if the ergonomics follow.

Passengers also benefit from an advanced audio system, optimized for each seat using active noise reduction technology.

Artificial intelligence is used with the voice agent “Afeela Personal Agent”, capable of understanding complex voice commands to control different vehicle functions.

Additionally, an active rear spoiler improves the sedan’s aerodynamics, while the cabin incorporates a series of high-resolution multimedia screens for front and rear passengers. Here too, we are curious to discover this new OS and to judge its ergonomics and responsiveness, based on the number of applications and navigation in the menus.

Afeela 1 Rates

The Afeela 1 will be manufactured in the United States, and the first reservations are already open in California, for a deposit of 200 dollars.

Two versions are planned:

  • Signature (high end) : available from 2026, at the price of 98 843 euros. This version includes 21-inch alloy wheels, camera mirrors, and a rear multimedia system with two screens.
  • Origin (version de base) : planned for 2027, with a more accessible price of 86 374 euros. It will have 19-inch rims, but without the advanced technologies of the Signature version.

Prospects that are ambitious to say the least

Although the launch of the Afeela 1 is limited to the Californian market, initially Honda and Sony are already planning to expand their range with additional models. Among the projects mentioned, an SUV and a minivan could see the light of day, depending on progress in the field of autonomous driving.

The strategy adopted by Sony Honda Mobility resembles that of other tech giants like Huawei and Xiaomi, which are also looking to enter the automotive sector with innovative offerings. However, Sony is opting for a resolutely high-end approach, aiming to attract premium customers.

The duo also hopes to conquer other international markets, including Europe, where demand for electric vehicles remains significant, even if sales have not been great in recent months. Also, Sony Honda Mobility managers know that to remain relevant in the long term, it is essential to offer a complete range quickly.

On this subject, Yasuhide Mizuno, President and CEO of Sony Honda Mobility, recently said:

« An SUV is the next logical step, perhaps an MPV. This will depend on progress made in autonomous driving. When we reach level 3 or 4, everyone will need this type of vehicle. If we only offer one model for five years, everyone will forget about us. ‘Sony Honda Mobility? A very sad story, people will say. »
