the essential
Injured in the left biceps during the SUA defeat at Valence-Romans on September 27, John Madigan is preparing to return to the field. If it is too short for the reception of Provence Rugby this Friday, the second row could apply for the visit of Biarritz next Thursday.
You finally see the end of the tunnel after more than three months of absence. How did you experience this period?
I wouldn’t say it was complicated, but it’s true that when you arrive at a new club you quickly want to show yourself, to bring something to the group. Unfortunately, I was injured in my fifth match. These are things that happen. Everyone was very good to me during my absence. I was very well surrounded. Here, when you are injured, you are still part of the group. You are not left out. In the end, I had a pretty good experience.
What was your schedule like during these three months?
The first two weeks were pretty uneventful with the care. Afterwards, little by little I started doing a little cardio on the bike. At the end of November, beginning of December I started running again and then working out. Compared to other injuries I’ve had, this one didn’t cause me too much worry.

Pro D2: convalescent and at the crossroads… What the statistics reveal about the start of the SU Agen season
Your teammates have just finished the first leg in 11th place. What did you think of their first part of the season?
We could have done better, but there were a lot of matches where we failed to score in the money-time. I find, however, that the block before Christmas did us good. Winning our two home games with the offensive bonus gave us confidence. This group has a lot of room for improvement, we just have to erase the little mistakes we make and be more clinical.
The objective at the start of the season was the top 6 before being revised downward following the defeat at home against Montauban. What about today?
I think that in this Pro D2 everyone has the ambition to play for the top 6. Afterwards, with these mixed results it’s a little complicated but I think it’s still possible. To do this, we must carefully negotiate the next two receptions against Provence Rugby and Biarritz. If we want to continue dreaming, we must prevail. Everything can go very quickly in one direction or another. If we already win this Friday it will be a first step. Afterwards, we’ll think about the rest.

Pro D2: returns and uncertainties… SU Agen is preparing for a “pressure” resumption against Provence Rugby
A word about this Provence Rugby team? You almost won at their home in the first leg…
It’s a team that has a lot of very good players, stars even. They are very physical and play a lot on their power. It will be a big challenge. I hope that unlike the first leg the coin will fall on the right side.
To conclude, what can we wish you at the start of the year?
I hope to get back in shape and not get injured again even if it’s sport. I can’t wait to get back with the group and give my best.
