Twenty-four new municipalities were created in 2025, as indicated in the Official Journal this Monday, January 1. These new municipalities result from the merger of two municipalities.
They were adopted by decrees throughout 2024, they now officially exist. In total, 24 new municipalities were created in France this Wednesday, January 1, indicates the Official Journal.
They are all the result of mergers of already existing municipalities. The objective of these groupings: to make savings by pooling financial, human and material resources.
This is the case of the municipalities of Saint-Denis and Pierrefitte-sur-Seine, in Seine-Saint-Denis, which merged to bear only the name of Saint-Denis. It thus becomes the second largest city in Ile-de-France with nearly 150,000 inhabitants behind Paris and ahead of Boulogne-Billancourt (Hauts-de-Seine).
“Unity does not necessarily create wealth but strength. The new commune is a solidarity project, a left-wing project,” explained the PS mayor of Saint-Denis Mathieu Hanotin during the municipal councils which took place held in May 2024.
