On the eve of New Year's Eve, police and gendarmes carried out an all-out control operation, this Monday, December 30, 2024, on the ring road and on the D 115 in the direction of Nègrepelisse. In 2024, 24 deaths will be reported in Tarn-et-Garonne.

For anyone who had something to complain about, it was not good to drive on the Montauban ring road (Tarn-et-Garonne) and the D115 towards Nègrepelisse this Monday, December 30 in the middle of the afternoon. The police and gendarmerie carried out a large-scale control operation with numerous personnel involved. The police targeted the ring road with, in the direction of Brive and , officials stationed on the Léojac bridge to carry out speed checks with reception committees distributed on the last two exits of the ring road and up to the barrier of Montauban north toll.
In total, around ten police officers were involved with, in addition to speed, checks for alcohol, drugs, identity and some trunk openings.

Private radar cars in summer 2025

Next summer, Tarn-et-Garonne should receive an allocation of unmarked vehicles equipped with on-board radars driven by private individuals. This system was tested in for several months with 126 cars spread across 31 departments of which Tarn-et-Garonne was not part. Now validated, it will be gradually extended to the entire territory. “With the police and the gendarmerie, we have defined the most accident-prone routes and, after a few months of calibration at the start of the year, I hope that these vehicles will be operational from next summer,” explains the Prefect, Vincent Roberti , which obviously aims to reduce the number of deaths on the roads.
The department should be crisscrossed by four or five vehicles of this type, which will be added to the two vehicles already available to the police (Montauban and Castelsarrasin), the gendarmerie only having to date one unmarked car with on-board radar despite the extent of its territory.

On the eve of the New Year celebrations, the 2024 report in Tarn-et-Garonne shows 24 deaths, including 8 in the police zone and 16 in the gendarmerie. “We are on the same figure as last year with a few specificities,” comments Prefect Vincent Roberti, present at both inspections. 18-25 year olds are less impacted, unlike seniors. With age, the reaction time increases and we also have to take medication, which is not always compatible with driving. We also have more and more drivers taking narcotics. Many do not know that the effects can spread. over several days.”

The gendarmes were stationed at the Nègrepelisse roundabout.

“Ensure a network and make an impression”

Every day, the police conduct an average of ten checks, day and night. “We have just experienced several pile-ups and let's not forget the double fatal accident of a wrong-way driver last August, a phenomenon that we encounter regularly. This is why we must ensure a network and make an impression with a goal preventive and repressive”, relates Régis Allegri, departmental director of public security while a vehicle has just been checked at 127 km/h and another was traveling without insurance.

The gendarmes, around twenty in total from the EDSR and the Montauban Company, were stationed near the entry roundabout at Nègrepelisse with the same objectives. “The D 115 is one of the busiest axes in the department. The EDSR controls speed and intercepts offenders in Saint-Etienne-de-Tulmont, while the Compagnie de Montauban carries out checks on behavior, drugs and of alcohol in Nègrepelisse”, details the boss of the Group, Colonel Marc de Rémond du Chélas.

With the arrival of stubborn fog, the police also increased awareness about lighting taking into account the current weather conditions.
