Since the return of border controls decided by the German Federal Minister of the Interior on September 16, 2024, 726 people arriving from France illegally have been arrested in Germany, according to information from the German federal police in Koblenz, reported by France Bleu Lorraine Nord, Sunday December 29, 2024. In total, the first report shows 1,159 people in an illegal situation arrested in Germany since September.
This measure implemented with all the countries bordering Germany, namely Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Poland, the Czech Republic and Switzerland, is supposed to fight against illegal immigration. It was announced by Chancellor Olaf Scholz for France on September 16, 2024, after the deadly attacks committed by irregular migrants in Germany.
These random checks concern road users including long-distance buses and trains. They will be in force until March 2025, a duration of six months in total, but Germany can extend this measure in accordance with the reform of the Schengen code of May 2024, which authorizes border controls for two years.
