The tragedy took place on Saturday near Tarascon-sur-Ariège. A man who went trail running in the Pyrenees was found dead by emergency services, we learned from the gendarmerie on Sunday, confirming information from the daily Dispatch from the South.
This man in his forties, an “a priori seasoned” trail enthusiast, was discovered lifeless by the high mountain gendarmerie platoon (PGHM) around 6 p.m. on a “very steep” location in the territory of the Pyrenean commune of Arignac (Ariège), the duty officer of the gendarmerie group told AFP.
An open investigation
The death appears “following a fall”, specified the same source, indicating that an investigation had been entrusted to the gendarmerie to determine the causes of this man's death. The search, launched early in the afternoon after a call from walkers who heard a cry for help, initially yielded nothing.
Then a second call, from relatives of the victim without any news from him, led to the deployment of two helicopters, including one from the aerial section of the gendarmerie (SAG) of Toulouse, equipped with thermal cameras. PGHM rescuers were then “able to be dropped off and find the body”, at a “very steep” location, not far from a path “a priori which he should not have taken”, specified the officer. .
